Review: Weekends Increase Likelihood of ICU Deaths

Chest, an academic medical publication, published a review article in its current issue finding that patients admitted to an intensive care unit on the weekend could be more likely to die than those admitted during the weekdays, according to a USA Today report.

After examining the results of 10 studies regarding the link between ICU admission time and death rates, the journal hypothesizes these findings as a result of reduced staffing during the weekends. However, Rodrigo Cavallazzi, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Louisville, suggested alternative reasoning, such as physician fatigue or patients waiting until the weekend to check in could have further advanced their symptoms, in the USA Today report.
