Rep. Meadows, chair of Freedom Caucus, opposes reinsurance plan

Though Senate Republicans have agreed to consider a reinsurance bill that would reimburse insurers for covering extremely-high cost patients, Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, has come out against the proposal, according to The Hill.

Republican leaders included a repeal of the individual insurance mandate in their tax bill, but also agreed to pass the Alexander-Murray market stabilization bill and a reinsurance bill to gain the support of moderate party members such as Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.

Mr. Meadows said the inclusion of these provisions is counterintuitive for Republicans who spent the better part of 2017 trying to dismantle the ACA.

"That's a totally different thing because that actually puts more money into a failing system where the money will not actually lower premiums and reduce costs in a substantial way," Mr. Meadows told The Hill. "I think that's a bigger problem."

Though agreeing to pass the reinsurance bill was essential for securing Ms. Collins' support, it may be difficult to pass the bill through the House if conservative representatives, such as those in the Freedom Caucus, are opposed to it.
