Physician at risk of losing coverage under ACA repeal to run for Congress

Danielle Mitchell, MD, a Chattanooga, Tenn.-based board-certified primary care and sports medicine physician, on Tuesday said she will run for a seat in Tennessee’s 3rd Congressional District, according to TheChattanoogan.com.

Dr. Mitchell aims to unseat Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, R, by running on a campaign platform of “electing government officials who are trained to take care of people,” according to the report. Her decision to run for office was spurred by current efforts by Republican lawmakers to repeal and replace the ACA, which she believes is our “Constitution of Healthcare Rights.”

Having grown up in a working-poor socioeconomic class, she lost her younger brother to a disease that could have been effectively managed if her family had access to affordable healthcare, according to the report. Dr. Mitchell herself also “won the lottery of preexisting conditions” after a lifelong battle with obesity and being diagnosed with a severe vascular condition that nearly led to the amputation of her entire right leg.

Efforts to roll back protections for people with preexisting conditions could put Dr. Mitchell’s insurance in jeopardy, despite her 20-year career in medicine.

Dr. Mitchell currently owns a community healthcare clinic that serves more than 1,300 people in Chattanooga.
