Massachusetts’ Partners HealthCare Reports 35% Drop in Income

Partners HealthCare System in Boston reported a 35-percent drop in income for the second quarter, due to flat patient volume, higher expenses and a shortfall from government payments, according to a report by the Boston Globe.

The eight-hospital system, including Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s  hospitals, reported income declined to $22.5 million for the three months ended March 31, compared with $34.5 million during the same period a year before.

The U.S. Justice Department is investigating Partners for possible anticompetitive behavior, following a report by the Massachusetts attorney general blaming market clout of providers like Partners for increasing medical costs in the state.
