The biggest jump was found in hospital-to-hospital exchange. In 2013, 40 percent of hospitals had shared clinical information electronically with another hospital, up from 15 percent in 2008. Exchange with ambulatory providers remained the most common type of exchange, done by 36 percent of hospitals in 2008 and 57 percent of hospitals in 2013.
As hospitals begin to attest to meaningful use stage 2, which requires hospitals to be able to share clinical documents with other providers, the ONC expects the rate of data exchange between hospitals to continue to increase, according to an ONC blog post.
