N.Y. Governor Appoints Work Group to Save Struggling Brooklyn Hospitals

Five of Brooklyn’s private hospitals are considered in danger of closing: Interfaith Medical Center, Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and Brooklyn Hospital Center. Closures could lead the area’s public hospitals to over-capacity levels, reducing access to care.

The work group is considering a proposal to expunge the hospitals’ debt, using some tax payer funds, and then allowing for-profit hospital operators to take over the hospitals, using more efficient models.

The group is expected to present its recommendations later this month.
