On June 10, the Des Moines Register reported more than 1,000 eye patients were sent letters asking for donations that were signed by the physician heading the ophthalmology department. If patients donated, the U of I Foundation would inform the physician of those patients’ names.
Hospital and U of I Foundation officials have denied ethical conflicts with the campaign, but patient advocates say it could take financial advantage of patients who feel they owe their physicians for medical treatment.
This week, the Board of Regents will meet with leaders from the U of I Foundation to discuss the manner of the donation campaign. Board leadership also recently met with U of I President Sally Mason, according to the report, although details about that meeting were not disclosed.
