Stony Brook University Medical Center Hobbled by New York State’s Budget Woes

Stony Brook University Medical Center, a 554-bed hospital owned by New York State, has been hobbled by the state’s budget problems, according to a report by Long Island Business News.

The Long Island hospital lost $43 million in state payments last year and $37 million this year, when the state failed to pay its share of employee raises locked in by a collective bargaining agreement.

To help make up for the losses, the state has been accelerating disproportionate share payments to Stony Brook, but the hospital could face another $4.6 million in Medicaid cuts proposed by state legislators, according to the report.

Stony Brook CFO Dennis W. Mitchell said in the report that state policy prevents the hospital from laying off workers, but it has cut 100 positions through attrition and the hospital is improving management of supplies and has cut back on nonclinical services.
