New rule could force choice between healthcare, green cards

The Trump administration is considering a rule that would require legal immigrants to forgo government assistance, including healthcare, to receive a green card, according to The New York Times.

The proposed rule would make green card applicants ineligible for permanent residency if they have recently used benefits such as Medicaid and children's health insurance; the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Plan; the Supplemental Nutritional Program for Women, Infants and Children; tax credits; and housing and transit subsidies. Immigrants who used these services within 36 months of applying for a green card would not be eligible, according to the report. Immunizations and Medicare would not be included.

Current law considers cash benefits, such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, as part of the application process.

After the rule is published, there will be a public comment period. Read more on the rule here
