The LSU hospitals are facing a slated budget cut of $24.5 million total. The system’s share of the cut was $21.5 million, but another $3 million comes from cuts required to balance the budget allotment the agency received in Gov. Bobby Jindal’s initial budget.
The president of the Louisiana Hospital Association, John Matessino, has said reduction in LSU services and beds would boost pressure on other local community hospitals, according to the report.
If the budget cut is finalized, it would prompt the closure of LSU’s Mental Health Emergency Room Extension at multiple hospitals. Hospitals would have to close various specialty services, such as ob-gyn clinics, psychiatric units, orthopedic services, cardiology programs, rheumatology services and more.
