After the reduction — which will affect 12 beds in medical/surgery, four in the emergency department and six in the intensive care unit— the medical center will have 120 beds. This bed reduction plan replaces an earlier strategy to phase out the hospital’s obstetrics services over a six-month time span.
E.A. Conway Administrator Ayron McGuire said there is an official “civil service layoff plan” in place for employees affected by the bed reduction. The cuts are to be implemented “very soon,” he said in the report.
LSU Health System is facing large Medicaid cuts in fiscal year 2013 after the state announced a $859.2 million cut to the state health program.
