Consulting firm Kaufman, Hall & Associates included this estimate in its recent report on a business plan for UMC. The plan must be approved by Louisiana’s House Budget Chairman Jim Fannin (D-Jonesboro) before the UMC board can acquire construction contracts.
A UMC board member said the state general fund is $8 billion and total budget $25 billion, according to the report. The state has already committed $730 million to UMC and may provide an additional $100 million or more for a federal settlement for Charity Hospital’s losses from Hurricane Katrina. Charity Hospital is UMC’s predecessor.
The hospital is planned to open in 2015.
