The Committee on Patient Safety and Health Information Technology was formed after alarming studies were released about electronic medical record systems and the dangers they pose for patients, particularly computer errors, design flaws and communication breakdowns that can hugely affect patients, according to the report.
The panel is led by the former president and CEO of the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Gail L. Warden. Various industry groups and leaders, such as HIMSS, support the panel’s formation and increased focus on patient safety with EMRs. Others, particularly vendors such as Epic, oppose government regulation of their products, claiming such government regulations “stifle innovation,” according to the report.
