The planned 11-story tower, which will stand adjacent to the existing hospital building, will have four patient rooms for general and intensive care units.

According to hospital officials, the first tower should be completed by late 2012. The second phase of construction, which will include a $400 million tower to house the women’s hospital, is scheduled to begin in early 2012.

The expansion will allow existing beds in semi-private patient rooms to move to fully private rooms. Inova said it will use debt to finance up to half of the project. Internal reserves will cover the rest, though an exact decision on permanent financing will not be made until next year.

Inova is already greater Washington D.C.’s biggest hospital by revenue and trails only Washington Hospital Center in patient capacity.
