Between Jan. 2002 and July 2007, Dr. Sheth admitted he defrauded more than 30 insurers by billing them for the highest level of cardiac care when in fact those services were not performed. He used his access at three unidentified hospitals to obtain patient information and then hired individuals to bill insurers for treatments that never occurred. His fraudulent billings included $8.3 million to Medicare and approximately $5 million to other public and private payors, according to the report.
Dr. Sheth pleaded guilty after being charged in Jan. 2009 with healthcare fraud. Dr. Sheth surrendered his medical license in March. He will begin his jail term in October.
