House votes to abolish Medicare Independent Payment Advisory Board

The House passed a bill Thursday to abolish the Independent Payment Advisory Board, a group charged with determining Medicare cuts if spending rises above a certain threshold, according to The Hill.

No one has been appointed to the board yet, and it is not expected to be necessary until 2020 or 2021. Though Congress has the authority to overrule the board’s decisions, critics viewed the board as legislators outsourcing their work.

Seventy-six House Democrats voted for the measure, though Democratic leadership did not support the bill. It is unclear if GOP leaders in the Senate will be able to court the eight non-Republican votes necessary for passage.
