Hospital Mass Layoffs More Than Double From April to May

The hospital sector had 11 mass layoffs in May, up from the five reported in April but steady from the 12 that occurred last May.

May's mass layoffs at hospitals affected 765 people. Despite May bringing more than twice as many mass layoffs as the month prior, the total number of mass layoffs for 2012 still sits lower than the 2011 figures. There have been 43 mass layoffs so far this year, whereas 54 mass layoffs were recorded January through May 2011.

The ambulatory healthcare services sector had four mass layoffs in May, the lowest so far in 2012 and half of the eight mass layoffs recorded in May 2011. Layoffs this May affected 3,185 people.
