Number of Uninsured Up 5M During Recession

The number of uninsured in the United States grew by 5 million, from 45 million to 50 million during the recession, according to a study by the Urban Institute Health Policy Center published in Health Affairs.

Loss of employment and declining incomes during 2007-2009 helped contribute to the increase.

All groups of Americans were affected, but the study called the growth in the number of uninsured “particularly noticeable” for whites, native-born citizens and residents of the Midwest and South.
