When the 42-bed, eight-OR orthopedic hospital opened as a physician-owned facility in 2003, it faced stiff resistance from area hospitals. Then it was acquired in 2007 by Mount Carmel, which currently operates four hospitals in central Ohio.

New Albany hosted 7,000 surgeries in 2006, one year before the merger, and 8,813 in 2009, two years afterward.
