Mr. Sullivan died March 31 at Spring Arbor of Albemarle in Albemarle, N.C., according to his obituary. He was 77.

Mr. Sullivan served in hospitals in Tennessee and Kentucky at the beginning of his career, according to his obituary. He then moved to North Carolina with his family in the late 1980s to serve as CEO of Stanly Memorial Hospital in Albemarle, now Atrium Health Stanly.

His obituary notes that while at Stanly, Mr. Sullivan was known "for his daily rounds, walking the halls of the hospital, even on weekends and holidays, getting to know the employees and making sure they knew they were appreciated for their work and dedication."

Mr. Sullivan began serving as executive vice president at Carolinas HealthCare System, now Atrium Health, in 1995. He then moved to Mt. Pleasant, S.C., in 2008 to oversee the building of the new Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital.

"Sullivan joined the system in May 2008, just before the Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital groundbreaking," the post reads. "His tenure saw numerous achievements in building and opening the award-winning hospital. He retired in 2015 after seven dedicated years of service."

Happy Everett, chief nursing officer for Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital, added: "When I think of John, I remember his gentle leadership. He was a kind and active listener who held everyone around him to a high standard."
