Dr. Price told the newspaper he formally applied with Gov. Brian Kemp’s office for the seat, joining other applicants including U.S. Rep. Doug Collins, R-Georgia, and Georgia Public Service Commissioner Tim Echols. The winner of the race will take over the seat held by Johnny Isakson, a Republican senator resigning from the Senate Dec. 31.

Dr. Price, an orthopedic surgeon, resigned from HHS in September 2017 amid a scandal over his use of taxpayer-funded private jets. He previously served four terms in the Georgia Senate before representing Georgia’s  6th Congressional District in the U.S. House.
