The amount is the highest sum ever recovered from individuals and companies who tried to defraud federal healthcare programs.

In 2011, the government increased its strike force presence to nine cities. Those teams identify high-billing levels and healthcare fraud hot spots. In 2011, the strike force operations charged a record number of 323 defendants who were allegedly responsible for billing Medicare more than $1 billion.

In total, including strike force matters, federal prosecutors charged 1,430 defendants with healthcare fraud and related crimes in 2011.
