Following Owners' "Outburst," N.J. Senator Calls for Independent Monitoring of Meadowlands Hospital

New Jersey Senator Joseph F. Vitale said accusatory comments from the owners of Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in Secaucus, N.J., illustrate the need for independent monitoring of the facility, according to a Hudson Reporter.

While guiding a local newspaper reporter on a tour, hospital owners Richard Lipsky, MD, and Tamara Dunaev accused Meadowland's former operator, LibertyHealth Systems, of "cannibaliz[ing]" the facility before selling it to them last year.

In a statement, Senator Vitale said he was "disappointed by the combative remarks of Meadowlands Hospital owner Dr. Richard Lipsky, who referred to the hospital's healthcare union as 'a malignant, cancerous organization' and blamed reported problems at the healthcare facility on sabotage, either by the previous owners or current workers," according to the report.

Senator Vitale also said he has requested an independent monitor — paid for at the hospital's expense — to be sent to Meadowlands to resolve questions about quality of care and operations. "I think that this most recent outburst from the owner of the hospital further underlines the need for an independent voice of reason at the facility," Senator Vitale said in the report.
