Washington’s Whidbey General Hospital Pushes for Expansion Bond, Considers Merger

As Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville, Wash., plans a new vote for a $50 million expansion bond, the administration is open to the possibility of a merger, according to a Whidbey News-Times report.

The bond would fund construction of a new wing with 39 single-bed rooms. The expansion could help Whidbey General Hospital to compete with nearby Skagit Valley hospitals and Providence Everett (Wash.) Regional Medical Center.

The first vote for the bond failed to pass with only 55 percent supporters, five percent short of the required majority to pass.  A new vote will be scheduled for either Nov. 2011 or Feb. 2012.

Hospital leaders are committed to keeping the hospital independent but may consider a merger in the future, according to the report.

Whidbey General Hospital rejected a recent acquisition proposal from Franklin, Tenn.-based Capella Healthcare. Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals and Providence Everett (Wash.) Regional Medical Center may also be interested in acquiring the hospital.
