Memorial has managed to succeed financially as other entities, including Jackson Health System in Miami-Dade, fight to cut costs. Over the last two fiscal years, Memorial made $232 million, whereas Jackson lost $337 million, according to the report. Sal Barbera, who teaches at FIU, said “management stability” is the reason for Memorial’s stark success. Jackson Health has gone through five leaders since 1987, whereas Memorial has been led by one leader since that time, according to the report.

Other contributing factors to Memorial’s success are profitable payor mix, lower uninsured patient volumes and lower operating costs.
