U of Maryland Medical System board discloses potential conflicts of interest

University of Maryland Medical Center's board reported their financial ties to the Baltimore-based health system for the first time since a conflict of interest scandal led to a major leadership upheaval, The Baltimore Sun reports.

The filings are momentous after a third of the previous 30 board members were found to have undisclosed financial ties to the system. The most high-profile case involved former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh, who had a deal worth $500,000 with the health system for the sale of her children's books, according to the report.

Only two of the 13 new board members disclosed financial ties. One was Elisa Basnight, senior vice president of supply chain for the American Red Cross, and the other was Kathleen Birrane, a partner at law firm DLA Piper. Both directors' companies had done business with the health system, but neither Ms. Basnight nor Ms. Birrane were directly involved, according to the report.
