Federal prosecutors have declined to intervene in the portion of a qui tam lawsuit that names specific Tennessee hospitals as participants in falsifying medical reports made by a physician, according to a Jackson Sun report.
The suit was filed by Wood M. Deming, MD, in 2007 and claims Elie H. Korban, MD, falsely and fraudulently billed for unnecessary cardiac procedures. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has intervened in this part of the lawsuit, but declined to intervene in the portion alleging other claims against several individual defendants, including Regional Hospital of Jackson and Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, both located in Jackson, Tenn. Dr. Korban is an independent physician who served on the medical staffs of both hospitals.
Regional Hospital of Jackson issued a statement saying it is “pleased that the United States chose not to intervene,” according to the report. It will continue to cooperate with government investigators in the ongoing investigation of Dr. Korban.
