Earlier this week, the Health Professional and Allied Employees Union, which represents nurses at Englewood, called the hospital “shortsighted” for its decision to lay off nurses, pointing to other New Jersey hospitals that were not laying off employees.
The hospital said the reductions are due to financial pressure and declining volume. “The Medical Center implemented reductions only where necessary and only in proportion to the decrease in patient census, so that our patients would continue to receive the highest quality of care they deserve and have come to expect,” the statement read.
The statement also revealed that there were 60 vacant positions available to the laid-off staff, which resulted in the 18 actual staff reductions.
