Community Health Systems Shareholders Sue, Alleging Securities Fraud

Shareholders of Franklin-Tenn.-based Community Health Systems have filed suit against the hospital operator alleging securities fraud and schemes by the company to artificially inflate stock prices, according to a Dallas Business Journal report. The suit, which was filed on behalf of the Minneapolis Firefighters’ Relief Association in the U.S. District Court Middle District of Tennessee, is seeking class action status.

The suit stems from a suit filed in April by Tenet alleging Medicare overbilling to CHS resulting from improper one-day inpatient admissions at CHS facilities. Tenet claims to have discovered the alleged overbilling during CHS’ efforts to takeover Tenet, which were ultimately rejected. In May, CHS stockholders filed suit to recoup stock losses suffered as a result of alleged Medicare overpayments caused by the hospital operator.

CHS called the overbilling claims baseless.
