CMS Issues Proposed Rule Requiring Providers to Expand Patient Notification

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services today issued a proposed rule that would require Medicare providers and suppliers to notify Medicare beneficiaries of their right to contact their state’s Medicare quality improvement organization if they have concerns about the quality of care they receive, according to an AHA News Now report.

Currently, only inpatient Medicare beneficiaries are required to receive notice of this right. The new rule would expand notification requirements to all Medicare patients at hospitals; rehabilitation, home health and public health agencies; long-term facilities; and ambulatory surgical centers among other facilities, according to the report.

CMS will accept comments on the proposed rule until April 3.
