The announcement was set to take place at a media availability, which went on without the announcement. A CMS official told The Hill the agency cancelled the announcement over an internal disagreement on the decision to reject the lifetime benefit cap.
Ms. Verma did not specifically address Kansas’ waiver request but spoke about the complicated nature of lifetime limits at the press briefing.
“We’re trying to think about all of the nuances here,” Ms. Verma said, according to The Hill. “We understand that people’s circumstances change over time and that they may actually get into a job and then maybe something happens in a few years.”
All Democratic members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee sent a letter to HHS Secretary Alex Azar in March opposing lifetime limits.
“Lifetime limits or caps on coverage would be an unspeakably cruel attack on Americans struggling to make ends meet,” the letter reads.
