The 360-bed hospital, located on a man-made island, is slated to be complete by next April. It is Cleveland Clinic’s second presence in the Middle East, as the system has managed Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi since 2007.
So far, Cleveland Clinic has approximately 300 caregivers employed in Abu Dhabi. Marc Harrison, MD, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, told the Plain Dealer the hospital will employ about 2,500 nurses and allied health professionals and 175 physicians.
Dr. Harrison also said more than 3,500 physicians from around the world have applied to work at the new hospital. While he said Cleveland Clinic pays Abu Dhabi providers “in a way that is proportional to the environment they are living in,” Dr. Harrison also said the system does not want people who are motivated by money. Instead, Cleveland Clinic is looking for employees who have professional options but are opting to help create a hospital overseas, according to the report.
