When the 70-year-old Nobel Prize winner recently announced his retirement in an e-mail message to staff, he said the center had exceeded its $2 billion capital goal and he outlined expansion plans, possibly at clinical facilities in Manhattan, the New York Times reported.
Dr. Varmus said he would remain in charge until a successor is found.
