The CDC is walking back more of its recent job cuts, with plans to reinstate more than 400 people who were previously laid off, according to an internal email obtained by Politico

About half of the employees being reinstated work in the National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD and Tuberculosis Prevention, according to the report. One-third are staff members in the National Center for Environmental Health. The agency’s National Center for Health Statistics, Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics, Office of Human Resources, Global Health Center, Office of Acquisition Services and Office of Communications are also rehiring staff.

At least 700 of the roughly 2,400 CDC employees who were terminated in April have since been rehired. In May, HHS said it would reinstate 328 workers in the CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which is focused on screening coal miners for black lung disease and coordinated healthcare coverage for 9/11 first responders.

On June 3, former HHS employees filed a lawsuit against former Department of Government Efficiency leader Elon Musk and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., alleging the move to fire 10,000 federal health employees was based on faulty data. Days after announcing the sweeping layoffs, Mr. Kennedy acknowledged that mistakes may have been made and suggested that around 20% of affected employees would have their jobs reinstated.
