California Healthcare District Tries to Avoid Dissolution

Mt. Diablo Health Care District, based in Concord, Calif., is making some last-ditch efforts to avoid dissolution, according to a Contra Costa Times report.

The health system, which turned hospital operations over to John Muir Health in 1996, recently retained an attorney and hired a general manager in attempt to stave off a dissolution vote by Contra Costa County’s Local Agency Formation Commission, which was expected to occur early next year, according to the report.

Four grand juries have called for dissolution of the hospital district after determining the district has “outlived its purpose and spends most of its money on overhead,” according to the report. The LAFC has hired a consultant to determine if the district is able to fulfill and afford its mission and will consider the results before it votes on the district’s future.

While proponents of the dissolution argue the district is no longer viable, others worry dissolving the district could put the future of Concord’s hospital in jeopardy.
