Boston Medical Center May Eliminate 85 of 496 Beds

Boston Medical Center, the largest safety-net hospital in New England, may close a portion of its campus and eliminate 85 of its 496 beds over the next four to five years, according to a Boston Globe report.

The hospital is considering closing its East Newton Street campus. That is the site of the former University Hospital, which merged with Boston City Hospital in 1996 to create BMC.

Hospital officials say the closure would occur in anticipation of state and federal budget cuts and growing pressure to shift more patient care to the outpatient setting, according to the report.

The plan would unfold over the next four to five years, and it requires approval from the BMC board and the Boston Redevelopment Authority.

BMC made it back in the black last year after losing money for several years, according to the report. The hospital posted a profit of $8.8 million in 2012, but it is still vulnerable to reimbursement cuts projected in the coming years, as the hospital derives roughly 75 percent of its revenue from Medicare and Medicaid.
