Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?
Vitaly Herasevich: The principle to lead team is beautify outlined in this RSA ANIMATE video – Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6XAPnuFjJc). Everything is about human motivation: purpose, autonomy, and mastery. I try to have team members enable all 3 components.
These processes allow me to have a handle on the business, drive innovation and execute, without doing the work myself. I can then focus on strategy and other organizational concerns.
Q: What does healthcare need more of? Less of?
VH: Modern healthcare needs more compassion. Now it is driven toward effective business with good ratings. Don’t get wrong – this is important to have efficiency. And technologies here can help to minimize routine tasks like appointment scheduling, prescriptions, etc. That will help providers turn back to the bedside and spend more time with patients.
Q: What is one topic or issue you’ve been investing time in to better understand as of late?
VH: My current research is exploring the area of computer vision and image reasoning. I truly believe this can help to automatize the healthcare routine (for purpose #3 above). Computer vision (artificial intelligence) can mimic humans reasoning for some degree and help recognize conditions before that captured in EMR (if even ever captured). Contactless heart and respiratory rate monitoring, body temperature measurements are reality today. More of computer vision applications are coming.
