Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?
Vince Pryor: I focus on establishing a clear and concise expectation and/or direction for the team. Making sure that everyone understands what is success and why our goals are critical to the organization. From there I let the team members function toward these goals without micromanaging the process, but having regular touchpoints on performance and issues that need to be resolved. Communication is key, both as the leader of the team, but also from the team members.
Q: What is one topic or issue you’ve been investing time in to better understand as of late?
VP: Digital Front Door and what is it our customers really want vs what we believe they need. Focusing on the desired end state vs how can we make a technology or system work in a certain manner. Also, Population Health and continuing to manage our population effectively through a very cumbersome system and deal with social determinants of health that significantly impact our success.
Q: What contributes to better conversations between a health system’s financial and clinical leaders?
VP: The avoidance of competition between the entities and/or the desire to control the other entity. Freedom to focus on the pure objective of meeting the needs of the patient, without other distractions and/or noise creeping into the conversation. Finding either alignment amongst the parties or a situation that the parties feel completely safe discussing strategic direction.
