Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?
Snehal Desai: Open, honest and real-time feedback. Thing’s are rapidly changing in technology as well as data & analytics. As leaders, we need to close the feedback loop with team members faster. Listen more openly. Provide
direct and honest feedback that is timely.
Q: As a leader, how do you stay connected to the actual work that is being done – and not just by watching others execute, but by executing yourself? If so, how do you balance between leading and executing personally?
SD:
- Practice Lean principles of Gemba walks, Visual Management and Leader Standard work.
- Visit places and see the work in person.
- Practice active metrics based on tracking, reporting, and showcasing failure as well as success.
- Clearly publish your priorities and track activities against those – publish them so both the team and others can see it.
- Solicit feedback and be Ok with change or pivot for continuous improvement.
Q: What is one topic or issue you’ve been investing time in to better understand as of late?
SD: How to remove waste from a very broad and complex healthcare process – whether it is drug distribution or medical devices, manufacturing or various services needed to improve patient health and safety. There is a huge opportunity to leverage data and analytics to make significant step-based improvement vs the small incremental improvement we have been making.
