Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?
Sheryl Johnson: Stay curious; ask engaging questions. You never know what you’re going to learn just by being curious and open to learning.
Q: What is one topic or issue you’ve been investing time in to better understand as of late?
SJ: I have become so interested in the idea of “purpose” and finding fulfillment in one’s work. The idea of “purpose” goes so much beyond the idea of engagement. I’m currently reading “Rituals for Work,” a book talking about how to create shared purpose within a team. The book and the overarching concepts are really interesting to me.
Q: What contributes to better conversations between a health system’s financial and clinical leaders?
SJ: Conversations between financial and clinical leaders always go better if they begin from the point of a shared vision or purpose. What are we both trying to accomplish? What do we each bring to the table that will help us be successful? Keeping the end in mind, will often help get things started and carry through any difficulties.
