Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?
Shelton Monger: To listen and try to understand. I foster an environment where team members feel free to express themselves without reservation and to allow them to do their jobs without micromanagement. Of course decisions and course corrections still need to be made but making those in a vacuum invariably leads to failure.
Q: As a leader, how do you stay connected to the actual work that is being done – and not just by watching others execute, but by executing yourself? If so, how do you balance between leading and executing personally?
SM: We’re a rather small organization so staying in touch isn’t too difficult. I keep current on technologies we use so I can intelligently discuss issues and strategies but usually allow team members to execute. I also occasionally take Service Desk calls and resolve user problems as my time and schedule permits.
Q: What is one topic or issue you’ve been investing time in to better understand as of late?
SM: Technologies and strategies to allow patients to assume more control over their healthcare. Portals are fine but a little cumbersome when working with multiple EHRs so initiatives like Apple Health are important. Additionally, sharing healthcare information with other providers and entities is challenging when working with EHRs other than Epic and Cerner so I’m following collaboration between CommonWell and CareQuality closely.
