Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?
Missie Wasielewski: Learn everything you can from your front line. When your front line believes that you understand their processes, they are far more engaged in change. Remember that your front line is not on the same continuum for change as the leader, so engage early and be ready to accept that the front line needs time to “catch up” to leadership on the change continuum.
Q: What does healthcare need more of? Less of?
MW: Over the past decade, revenue cycle management has been focused on how to meet the patients where they are through technology , but what if we were also able to meet the patient where they are socially and culturally? Healthcare leaders need to stop telling the consumers what we think they need and start engaging our communities and their social constructs at macro and micro sociological levels.
Q: What contributes to better conversations between a health system’s financial and clinical leaders?
MW: On our revenue cycle task force, we take the time to perform multi-disciplinary chart reviews. We talk to our doctors, nurses, coders, case managers, UM nurses, CDI specialists as well as our billing and compliance specialists as we walk through a day on the life of a denial or avoidable adjustment. What has been fascinating (and really the secret to our success) is learning what barriers our physicians and nurses face in the world of clinical documentation. This approach has taught our financial leadership team how to speak in terms of “telling the patient’s story, for better clinical outcomes” versus denials, compliance, DRG and payments.
