Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?
Joshen Lennerz: My No. 1 principle to effectively lead a team is to not waste time on unnecessary meetings. I ask myself what can the team get out of this meeting and who do we need to contribute. After review – maybe it is more effective to cancel.
Q: What is one topic or issue you’ve been investing time in to better understand as of late?
JL: Recently, I have been introduced to the concept of anti-fragility. Simply put it is the fact that certain systems increase in capability to thrive as a result of stressors. The concept –developed by Nassim Nicholas Taleb– is helpful to understand certain trends and shifts in complex systems when the cause or explanation is in question. Specifically, in information management where Data, Information, Knowledge, Action, and Result (DIKAR) have to be aligned, I’m trying to identify the anti-fragile contributions in each component to make better decisions.
Q: What contributes to better conversations between a health system’s financial and clinical leaders?
JL: The key element to improving conversations between financial and clinical leaders is to take the time to understand the other vantage point. Top-down and bottom-up processes may need to co-exist and require careful coordination and tailoring. Simply put – why not ask for help?
