Question: As a leader, how do you stay connected to the actual work that is being done? How do you balance between leading and executing personally?
Jeff Reger: Borrowing from Agile Software Development, we have daily standup meetings. The format is simple – each person has about 3 minutes to cover:
i. What did you accomplish yesterday?
ii. What is planned for today?
iii. What roadblocks are you working to overcome?
We then wrap up with any decisions or direction changes that would impact the focus for that day.
Q: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?
JR: Extreme Ownership. We are each accountable for the success of our work.
Q: What does healthcare need more of? Less of?
JR: More of: Better presentation of relevant data. Physicians are buried in data. We need better ways to organize and present that data so that the most relevant items are seen first. This needs to be customizable for each physician; A “one size fits all” solution is not good enough.
As a chief medical information officer, maintaining an active clinical practice allows me not only to see the clinical applications and computer systems that we put in place in action in a real-life environment, but also to continually use those systems and that technology myself in the delivery of patient care. I think it is important for physician leaders in information technology to continue to see patients in order to have that insight of the end-user clinician.
