Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?
Ed Marx: To treat each member as you would family. When you do so, you create an environment of trust which sets the foundation for everything else. Additionally, since we spend so much time with one another, having trust creates the environment for enjoyment and fulfillment of purpose. Super motivators to bring out the very best of each individual and thus the team.
Q: As a leader, how do you stay connected to the actual work that is being done – and not just by watching others execute, but by executing yourself? If so, how do you balance between leading and executing personally?
EM: I do a few things to supplement the rounding all leaders participate in. I serve as a volunteer at one of our hospitals. Each week I have the opportunity to interact with patients and fellow caregivers (employees). I recently started giving 10% of my time serving in the operating rooms. I used to be an anesthesia technician earlier in my career and I have been retrained to do the same now. Finally, I participate daily in our tiered huddles where we cover everything critical to ensuring the best experience for our patients and caregivers. This balance of both has enhanced my effectiveness and reaffirmed my purpose.
Q: What does healthcare need more of? Less of?
EM: Even more passion and teaming. I believe there is a correlation between actualizing one’s purpose and passion with outcomes. My hope is that whomever is on my team, they are there not just for a paycheck, but to fulfill their life’s purpose and passion. Team’s that have purpose outperform peers who may be more educated and experienced but lack passion.
