Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?

Deepti Sharma: I believe in a Servant Leadership style. It is very important to continuously learn and educate the team. It is important to communicate the vision so the contribution from the team makes an impact. I believe in being a part of the team and not just managing the team members.

Q: As a leader, how do you stay connected to the actual work that is being done – and not just by watching others execute, but by executing yourself? If so, how do you balance between leading and executing personally?

DS: Being a hands-on leader, I believe in leading by example. Since we follow an Agile SDLC process, it helps me to balance out things by ensuring I provide proper guidance to the team where needed while at the same time executing on some of the key portions of the work. We do daily stand-ups to ensure everyone is in the loop on what was planned, what work has been done and what roadblock the team is facing.

Q: What does healthcare need more of? Less of?

DS: The healthcare industry needs more collaboration in the form of increased interoperability of data. This is so that we can serve the patients and the participants in the industry appropriately through technology solutions. With interoperability, proper intelligent solutions can be designed to glean meaningful information from the different data sets. The industry needs less of data hoarding and data silos across organizations.
