Question: What is the No. 1 principle you uphold and practice to effectively lead a team?
Bonnie Phipps: There are two principles that I think are really important to maximize team performance. First, transparency so the team members understand the strategy and decision making and what is behind it. Second is allowing the participation of all members of the team in data gathering and decision making. This allows the leader to take advantage of varied backgrounds and thoughts and fosters buy into the decision.
Q: What does healthcare need more of? Less of?
BP: There is a relatively new concept of evidence-based management as opposed to management based on past experience or just gut feelings. Physicians have long accepted the concept of evidence-based care and it could be fascinating to have administrative and clinical leaders pursuing that approach. So, we need more of management based on evidence and science and less based on what we have done in the past.
Q: What is one topic or issue you’ve been investing time in to better understand as of late?
BP: The efficacious impact of AI on healthcare is being hotly debated. Clinical outcomes in certain populations is a fascinating field is study. IBM’s Watson may be our best source of knowledge as we deal with community health initiatives and population health.
