Question: What does healthcare need more of? Less of?
Anupam Goel: Healthcare needs more discussions about how they are adding more value to patients from a health and financial perspective. Healthcare needs less investment in pilot project that feed hype cycles but do not lead to sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery.
Q: What is one topic or issue you’ve been investing time in to better understand as of late?
AG: I have been investing a considerable amount of time to better understand how health information technology can support behavior change for providers and patients to move individuals to higher levels of health.
Q: What contributes to better conversations between a health system’s financial and clinical leaders?
AG: I think connecting clinical work with specific patient improvements in health is the most effective way to connect health system’s financial and clinical leaders. Financial leaders who can empathize with the clinicians about the ambiguity surrounding healthcare delivery and clinical leaders who can empathize with their P&L leaders about the need to convert healthcare innovations into expected future returns are more likely to prioritize relevant initiatives and gain buy-in to translate capital investments into durable improvements in healthcare. What contributes to better conversations between a health system’s financial and clinical leaders?
