Question: There is a lot to improve upon in healthcare. Of the many issues that hold your attention, what is the one you consider exceptionally imperative and urgent?
Samuel Moore: The ability to contain costs while sustaining growth year over year is a challenge each year.
Q: Healthcare leaders today need skills and talents that span beyond those emphasized during formal training and higher education. What is one specific competency that you learned or sharpened in real life?
SM: Slowing down and listening to what’s happening around the Hospital, whether that be during meetings or over lunch. There’s a lot to be gained both from what is said but also what is not.
Q: What is one convention, tradition or habit that healthcare has adopted and left unquestioned that you feel either needs to stop or undergo thoughtful scrutiny? Why?
SM: Creating a strategy for the future at the Executive level without input from the front line leaders. Our leaders who are in the trenches each day taking care of patients at bedside or in ambulatory settings see firsthand what may keep patients coming back. It’s these individuals who will be able to go beyond high level strategy to help dig deep into issues and potential solutions.
