Question: What initiative are you most excited about today at your healthcare organization? How will it affect the future of healthcare delivery?
Ian Jasenof: Our 3i Project will address our need to modernize operational workflows throughout UI Health. It is more than just the Epic Implementation and a new EHR system. It also addresses the need to mitigate the enterprise risk posed by an aging and fragmented information system. 3i stands for, integrated, information, infrastructure.
In order to mitigate the enterprise risk posed by an aging and fragmented information system (IS), UI Health leadership embarked on the 3i Initiative in 2016 with an evaluation of the existing IS infrastructure. The evaluation underscored the urgent need to address these deficiencies and risks by replacing the existing systems with a state-of-the-art information platform that integrates optimized business processes with standardized clinical workflows and modern analytical capabilities.
Q: What is the most important lesson you’ve learned about delivering excellent patient experience?
IJ: The most important lesson about delivering excellent patient experience is and will always be refining our patient engagement. Without patient engagement, our outcomes will never be optimal. Healthcare systems can build the best hospitals, ambulatory centers, imaging centers, but unless patients are not engaged, we will never truly impact population health.
Q: What do you see as the most dangerous trend in healthcare right now?
IJ: Relying on one’s EMR or implementation of a new EMR platform should not be the “end all, be all” for solving one’s quality outcomes, patient work flows, supply chain optimization, etc. The EMR is a solid tool to assist in achieving those goals and getting back to basics of solid leadership is foundational.
